As the sun dipped beneath the Tower Mountains to the west, Calliande stood near the gate to Tarlion and gazed at the ruins of Cathair Animus.

The crimson glow of the lake of molten stone covered the nearby hills and the side of the mountains with its light, and the pale dome of the warding spell shone in the gathering dark. To Calliande’s physical eyes, the dome had not changed. With her Sight, she could see it decaying. The rate of decay had accelerated over the last day.

It would not last much longer.

She looked to the side and saw Rhodruthain illuminated in the glow from the gate, his face distant as he gazed up at the first city of the gray elves. He seemed to sense her stare, and he turned his head to look at her.

“Keeper,” said Rhodruthain.

Calliande expected the wave of anger and hatred when she looked at him, but it didn’t come. She felt only a mild annoyance. The Maledictus of Shadows had twisted around her thoughts so much that she hadn’t realized it was happening. Just as well they had the Intercessors and their Interdiction of Defense.

“Guardian,” said Calliande. “The ward won’t last much longer, will it?”

“It will not,” said Rhodruthain. “It could collapse in the next five minutes. It could last another day. But it will not last longer than another forty-eight hours at most.” He drew in a long breath. “One way or another, in another two days, the War of the Seven Swords will reach its end.”

“The War of the Seven Swords,” said Calliande, “and much more than just that. You’ve been fighting the Sovereign and guarding the Well for a long time.”

“For fifteen thousand years,” said Rhodruthain. “For fifteen millennia, I have tried to defend the Well of Storms from the Sovereign.” His golden eyes regarded her without blinking. “And tomorrow that war will be decided. I do regret bringing you and your family here as I did, without telling you anything. But whatever chance of victory we have in this war is because of you and the Shield Knight.”

Calliande shifted, uneasy. “Generous words, considering I almost killed you.”

Rhodruthain smiled. “Almost is the key word. You badly wanted to kill me, I know…but you didn’t, and Selene showed us the truth. Whatever happens tomorrow, Keeper, you have my thanks and gratitude. We might lose all tomorrow, and the New God could rise to enslave the world. But if we are victorious, it is because of the aid you have given the realm of Owyllain.”

Calliande let out a long breath. “It is the duty of the Keeper to guard the realms of men from dark magic. And I have done only my duty…as you have done yours.”

And she knew that he was right.

Tomorrow, the battle to decide the fate of Owyllain and the world would begin.
